Jim Williams: Ines Sainz, the real story

There is no doubt that internationally known, Mexican-born sports journalist In?s Sainz is someone who can generate stories.

She was in the middle of a major story this summer when she allegedly became the focus of rude language about her provocative attire from members of the New York Jets. Sainz was in the Jets locker room as part of an interview she was conducting as reporter for TV Azteca.

Sainz has traveled the world interviewing a wide-range of superstars from Roger Federer to Kobe Bryant to Alex Rodriguez to the Williams sisters to Lorena Ochoa, just to name a few.

It’s clear from her resume, that she rates the top interviews no matter the subject’s gender.

We spoke on Friday about her work, her style and what she thinks of her celebrity.

At the 2007 Super Bowl Media Day you were photographed more often than all the players except for Peyton Manning. Do you seek the spotlight or does it find you?

Sainz » I never seek the spotlight or the attention. I am covering the major events worldwide and despite what some have said, I take my job as a reporter quite seriously. I interviewed Payton Manning and we had a wonderful conversation he spoke about his family and about football. The same thing with Mark Sanchez of the Jets — the interview was about his game, his family and his hobbies. I am paid to do the best job as a reporter that I can and as far as me becoming the story that has never been my goal and I am first and foremost a reporter.

What is your style?

Sainz » I am a positive person, so I like to look for the best in a person not the dark side. I try to engage the people I interview in conversation to let them feel comfortable and that they are having a conversation with a friend. I have found that most stars will open up and tell you more than they might have expected to say if you just are friendly and talk. I know for instance talking about fashion with Venus Williams got me a great deal more information about the person and the tennis player. So I like to talk and most star athletes like to talk when you are not going after dark issues.

What does the future hold for you?

Sainz » I want to be known more internationally. I produce, edit and write all of my own interviews and shows. I also market and sell them so I have deals in the United States, Europe and South America for my content and 2011 looks like a great year for me and my goal of being an international brand.
