Keys to the game

1. Beware of the deep ball » The Giants’ offense continues to roll despite an inconsistent running game behind an offensive line that has not lived up to its usual standards. But they’ve rolled because of quarterback Eli Manning and his receivers. Steve Smith is a tremendous route runner (pay attention, LaRon Landry). He and Hakeem Nicks are downfield threats, as is Mario Manningham. Nicks and Smith, in particular, excel at yards after the catch. Solid tackling is a must.

2. Attack the secondary » OK, let’s flip it and take a look at New York’s pass defense. The Giants have a weakened pass defense because of injuries and if corner Aaron Ross (hamstring) can’t play, it’ll get worse. They could be starting two backup corners; and their safeties aren’t special at all. Their back seven in general is weak. The key will be giving Jason Campbell enough time. The Giants’ pass rush has not produced, but the Redskins’ tackles have been known to end slumps.

3. Start strong » The Redskins’ biggest problem in losing three straight to New York (and 11 of 14), is their penchant for falling behind by double digits early. Often it’s because of a Redskins turnover. The early leads allow the Giants’ pass rush and ground game to take over. Washington can help itself by establishing a rhythm for Campbell, as it has done well lately, and emphasizing the run, even when it’s producing only three yards a carry.

Key matchups

Stephon Heyer • Redskins • RT » He’s questionable, but playing hurt regardless. If Will Robinson starts, lots of help will be needed.

vs.
Justin Tuck • Giants • DE »
He has only 4 1/2 sacks, but is often doubled. He can beat these guys one on one.

Andre Carter • Redskins • DE » When he shifts to left end, he’ll have the advantage. He’s thriving in one-on-one battles.

vs.
Will Beatty • Giant
s • RT » The Rookie tackle is making his second start; he’s a good athlete and has played well when needed.

Albert Haynesworth • Redskins • DT » He was solid in the first meeting, but needs to prove he can push off on his ankle.

vs.
Rich Seubert •
Giants • LG » He will get help but he can’t let Haynesworth be disruptive and needs to handle stunts.

State of the teams

GIANTS » New York has turned a 5-0 start into a 7-6 record and must win to stay in contention for a wild card spot. The defense has been harshly criticized, especially first-year coordinator Bill Sheridan.

REDSKINS » Washington again faces more disruption after another week of surprising developments. But the Redskins are used to those and it won’t affect them on the field. Their confidence was boosted by a solid road win at Oakland.

Examiner predicts

This should be a fun NFC East game, with potential offensive fireworks. The Giants are fading while the Redskins have improved; it’s a great chance for their first divisional win.
