Former Maryland standout Vernon Davis wanted to continue reshaping his image. But curling? Yes, the most-joked about sport in the Olympics found an unusual fan in Davis, now San Francisco’s tight end, once harshly criticized by coach Mike Singletary as someone they could not win with.

Davis met with some U.S. team curlers (curlees?) in San Jose last fall, tried his hand at the sport and was soon asked to be an honorary captain. He even filmed a PSA for the sport and is attending the Olympics in Vancouver.

“It shows a different side of me,” he told Sports Illustrated. “My versatility. My playful side. And it’s a chance to make friends at the Olympics.”

After the Olympics, he’s among a group of NFL players who will visit U.S. troops in the Middle East.

“I like to stay busy,” he told SI. “When I’m home I work out 24-7. It keeps me out of the clubs at night.”
