Paint Branch quarterback Scott Barnes speaks in a low-key monotone. But even he can’t disguise his enthusiasm when discussing his team’s turnaround season under rookie coach Mike Nesmith.
“It’s like night and day,” said Barnes. “Last year, we couldn’t wait for practice to be over. This year, we don’t want it to end.”
Barnes was speaking Wednesday night, after an exhausting four-hour session — practice followed by film study — in preparation for Friday’s game against visiting Damascus (8-1).
There’s a playoff berth on the line for Paint Branch (7-2) and meaningful games in November are a new experience for three-year starter Barnes. With a win tonight, the Panthers would secure their first playoff berth since 2000.
Credit Nesmith, who brought a pass-first mentality from Quince Orchard, where he was offensive coordinator. After posting solid numbers in unimaginative offenses for two seasons, Barnes has blossomed, completing 95 of 168 passes for 1,492 yards, and 20 touchdowns.
“This offense allows us to do so many more things,” said Barnes. “We’re doing a lot of shotgun. I can see the field much better. We’re running full-field routes. I go through my progressions and there’s usually something open.”
After a 2-2 start that included lopsided losses to Sherwood and Seneca Valley, Paint Branch has won five straight, averaging 42.2 points per game. Improvement has come despite the sudden transfer, three weeks ago, of the team’s top player, TE/LB Victor Gray, who moved to Orlando, Fla.
Barnes and the Panthers now believe it’s not about talent. It’s about the system.
“Last two years, we had the players to beat anybody in the state,” said Barnes. “This year we don’t have as much talent, but we’re a much better team. From the beginning, everyone has been committed to getting better. That’s the difference.”
