First Lady Laura Bush announced today that Barbara Morgan, an astronaut and former teacher, will make her first trip to space on August 8. Morgan will travel on the Space Shuttle Endeavour, which will head to the International Space Station.
Moragn was the “Teacher in Space” alternate to Christa McAuliffe during the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger Mission, which blew up only moments after lift-off.
In a call with Morgan, Mrs. Bush, a former teacher herself, told Morgan that “Americans–and lots of excited teacher and students–will be watching the mission with a lot of pride.”
