As it does every summer, the American Meat Institute on Wednesday brought three baseball greats to Capitol Hill as part of its annual Hot Dog Lunch. And as it does every year, People for theEthical Treatment of Animals attempted to upstage the carnivores by trotting out two sexy models clad only in faux-lettuce-leaf bikinis.

Signing autographs among AMI’s junk food — in addition to hot dogs, the trade group also served soda, chips, chili and Little Debbie Snack Cakes — were seven-time Gold Glove catcher Bob Boone, Hall of Fame pitcher Robin Roberts and former Oriole Al Bumbry, the 1973 AL Rookie of the Year.

Only about 100 feet away, Playboy’s Miss July 2002 Lauren Anderson (who we hear is dating the New Jersey Nets’ Matt Walsh) and Miss Budweiser Laura Guttridge were serving up veggie dogs.

Although the ladies didn’t attract many members of Congress (Larry Flynt’s cameras could be anywhere, after all), the hot dogs drew more than 100 members. Among them was Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., who confided to Bumbry that he was heading to the 1 p.m. Nationals game at RFK.

“Oh, so that’s what our politicians do,” joked the ex-jock, before an aide stepped in to assure him that Davis would be coming back to vote.
