Before the 2007 draft, some experts pegged Adam Carriker as a good fit in a defense that used a three-man front. Now they’ll find out if they were right.
The Redskins acquired Carriker merely by swapping picks in the fifth and seventh rounds. Washington now will select 163rd overall (fifth round) and 208th (seventh round). St. Louis will pick 135th and 211th.
Meanwhile, there were indications that perhaps the Redskins had been in talks again involving defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. The Nashville Tennessean reported that Tennessee had talked to the Redskins about acquiring their former star. A Redskins source confirmed Tennessee’s interest.
Washington’s front office has maintained that Haynesworth would return. Not everyone in the NFL is buying that; especially if a team offers the Redskins a second-round pick (which Tennessee does not have this year).
Carriker played with an ankle injury in 2008 and missed all of last season with a shoulder injury suffered in the preseason. But St. Louis insiders say he was miscast as a defensive tackle in a four-man front.
Also, Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett coached him in St. Louis before getting fired after the 2008 season.
“Adam is a guy who our staff is very familiar with. He is talented and has an incredible work ethic,” Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan said in a statement. “We feel he will fit in our scheme and will help us reach our defensive goals.”
