Pete Strickland, a former DeMatha High player and assistant coach, has been named the head coach at Spalding High School, according to Spalding athletic director Lee Dove.
Strickland is a former head coach at Division I Coastal Carolina, where he was fired after the 2004-05 season. Strickland was also an assistant coach at VMI, Old Dominion University and the University of Dayton.
“He seemed to be a man of integrity and character,” Dove told the Examiner on Friday. “Certainly you don’t need to challenge his basketball coaching skills.”
Strickland takes over for Mike Glick, who resigned for personal reasons late this past season. Glick was the head coach at Pallotti High in Laurel before he went to Spalding. Glick’s top players at Spalding included Baltimore’s Rudy Gay, a standout at the University of Connecticut.
