Lichtensteiger: No excuses not to be here

The Redskins once again had a solid turnout for their players-only minicamp. But once again second-year left tackle Trent Williams was not among those attending. And at least some players have noticed who has shown up – and who hasn’t.

Guard Kory Lichtensteiger, when asked if he’d like more of the starting line to be there, said, “Yeah, definitely. We’re here so we think it’s valuable. I don’t know why everyone else doesn’t. I know some people have to book a plane flight, but we have rookies here that are booking plane flights and first-year guys that don’t have a lot of money in the bank booking plane flights. So I don’t think there’s a whole lot of good excuses not to be here, honestly.”

Williams, who is working out in Houston, has yet to attend any of these workouts.

Williams said he did not know about these workouts until Monday. He also told ESPN980 that he thought this session was just for backs and receivers.

“I feel like it’s a big deal,” Williams said by phone. “If I wouldn’t have found out Monday that the workouts were Tuesday, then I probably would have been there. It was a last minute deal.”

A big knock on Williams coming out of college was his work ethic, not just in the weight room but in the classroom as well. He said he recently started boxing three times a week to improve his endurance and hand-eye coordination.

“I plan on trying to be in the best shape of my life,” Williams said.

Meanwhile, starting center Casey Rabach made four of the first five, but has been unable to participate in these workouts. Lichtensteiger, Will Montgomery, Selvish Capers and Clint Oldenburg have been the mainstays. Jammal Brown and Stephon Heyer are free agents.

Wednesday, 32 players participated, including ex-Redskin and current Colt Justin Tryon.

“It would be nice to have as many guys as we could out here,” quarterback John Beck said, “but I’m happy with the guys we’ve had come out because I feel we have gotten a lot accomplished.”

Tight end Chris Cooley said he’s glad he’s attended the workouts.

“Everyone has their own preparation and own thing going on,” Cooley said. “We’re not going to be disappointed in anyone not showing up. All I would say is that I’m benefiting from this; I feel this is making me a better player and this is preparing me to play this year.”
