Georgetown, Maryland ready for national exposure

Hoyas ready to show off their freshman phenom

Get ready for Georgetown freshman Greg Monroe’s coming out party at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla. — his first national television appearance since last spring, when an understated performance in the McDonald’s All-American game threw experts off the scent.

“I think we’ve got a lot of experts out there who decided his intensity was an issue,” said Georgetown coach John Thompson III after the Hoyas’ season opener, in which Monroe had 14 points and seven rebounds. “That wasn’t true tonight, and it won’t be true tomorrow.”

Two games into this season, Monroe has been as good or better than every other big-name member of his class, averaging 17.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 3.0 blocks and 1.5 steals. Only Memphis swingman Tyreke Evans can boast a line as complete, with 14.6, points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.6 steals.

For now, any discussion of a potential uber-clash between Georgetown and Maryland will have to wait until the weekend. Both teams will need the same results — in the same order — out of their first two games to bring about a meeting on Sunday.

“People want to see where we’re at, as far as right now,” said Hoyas senior guard Jessie Sapp. “Whether eyes are on us or not, we’re just going to continue to play hard.”
