Not rookies anymore

If the NFL had conducted a normal offseason — and the Redskins could groom their young players — then the ability of certain players to contribute would increase. Instead, nothing was normal, and now nothing is known about the players who could have been groomed.

Are they ready? Could they replace players who leave?

Here’s a look at five players who were rookies last year and their potential impact this season:

Wide receiver Terrence Austin » As a rookie, Austin spent most of his time on the practice squad. If the Redskins somehow don’t retain Santana Moss and sign a big receiver to play on the outside, they would need someone to play in the slot. The coaches like his quick feet and his route-running ability. But he’s not a game-changer.

Linebacker Perry Riley » With Rocky McIntosh possibly headed elsewhere, Riley could have a chance to land a starting job. That is, if the Redskins don’t sign another inside linebacker. Riley is a physical run-stopper, but the ability to play coverage is huge at this position. Is he ready?

Selvish Capers » He is not ready to become a starter, not after spending most of last season on the practice squad. But Capers’ athleticism is intriguing, and the Redskins could have a need for a backup swing tackle (if Stephon Heyer departs via free agency). The coaches like his footwork.

Wide receiver Brandon Banks » He made his impact on special teams, but there could be an increased role on offense. Defensive backs, fearful of getting beat deep, play far off him. It opens underneath routes for him. But Banks’ durability will always be an issue for coaches. They won’t want him doing too much and wearing down. And with three receivers drafted, including one who returns kicks, Banks can’t relax.

Running back Keiland Williams » He made it as an undrafted free agent, helping pick up blitzes. But the Redskins likely will try to sign a veteran running back and just drafted two backs. It’s hard to see his role expanding; then again, it was difficult to see him making the roster last year.
