5. 2003 Australian Open, third round » Setting the tone for a year he would end ranked No. 20 in the world, Fish upset fifth-seeded Carlos Moya in the second round 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 and had a two sets to none lead over Wayne Ferreira in the third before melting down in a 2-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-0 defeat.

But solid wins over 24th-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu, ninth-seeded James Blake and 32nd-seeded Gael Monfils followed, and Fish took the first set of his quarterfinal against eventual semifinalist Rafael Nadal only to lose 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
