With a pair of moves Thursday, the Orioles took small steps towards the future.

The Orioles traded infielder Chris Gomez to Cleveland and left-handed reliever John Parrish to Seattle after both players cleared waivers.

“It gives us the opportunity to get younger and puts us in a position to make as many good decisions as we possibly can related to 2008,” Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said.

Gomez was exchanged for the $20,000, while Parish was traded for minor league outfielder Sebastien Boucher and either a player to be named or cash.

Boucher, 25, is a speedy left-handed hitting center fielder, who was batting .298 in 28 games with Triple-A Tacoma. He?ll be assigned to Triple-A Norfolk.

The Orioles recalled right-handed reliever Jim Hoeyand purchased the contract of outfielder Tike Redman, both from Norfolk. Redman, 30, will serve as a fourth outfielder, with Jay Gibbons (shoulder) unable to play the outfield, leaving Orioles manager Dave Trembley with just three healthy outfielders. Redman and Hoey arrived prior to last night?s game against the Mariners.

“We?ll start looking at what we?re going to do in the future a little bit,” Trembley said. “I don?t think that?s any disrespect to [Parrish] or [Gomez] or anybody.”
