After excelling in Triple-A pitching for most of the season, J.R. House, a catcher and infielder, was promoted to the major leagues Monday when the Orioles purchased his contract.
He takes the place of outfielder Jay Gibbons, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list as he undergoes surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder today. House batted .295 with 10 home runs and 63 RBI in 109 games with the Norfolk Tides. He is 2-for-19 in 10 major league games ? all with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who selected him in the fifth round of the 1999 draft.
