Studs and Duds

A breezy morning and the temps weren’t bad. But no full pads, so take these with an asterisk:

Studs

FS LaRon Landry. Intercepted a Todd Collins pass in the red zone with a very nice read. Showed discipline to stay in his area in the nine-on-nine drill, allowing him to make the easy pick. After his interception, which was one of many by the defense, Fred Smoot hollered out as he ran onto the field, ”The [butt] whooping continues!”

SS Chris Horton. Also intercepted a pass.

FS Kareem Moore. Intercepted a Jason Campbell pass during the two-minute drill.

DT Albert Haynesworth. Just because. But also because he was no match for the second-string line, one time splitting Devin Clark and D’Anthony Batiste with ease. But he should. (He also called for a flag after getting through them).

DE Brian Orakpo. When he comes off the edge vs. the backups he wins. He would have recorded a couple sacks today, but he won’t be facing backups when the season begins. He did beat Chris Samuels on one rush. Orakpo’s footwork dropping into coverage seems to be improving.

DE Chris Wilson. Working at left end, he had a lot of success vs. Stephon Heyer. It was mostly pure speed.

WR Keith Eloi. Made a nice catch down the right sideline, beating Michael Grant. The only thing we couldn’t tell from our vantage point was whether or not he came down in-bounds. But it was also a nice throw from Chase Daniel. Also made a nice effort on a deep ball vs. Landry in full-team work. The only question on the incompletion was whether or not Landry interferred. He probably did.

QB Jason Campbell. Looked pretty good and mostly made good decisions, though he was picked off once. Connected with Antwaan Randle El in the back of the end zone in red zone work. Randle El reached up for a good catch.

Duds

QB Todd Collins. Looked mostly sharp, but made a blunder inside the red zone in nine-on-nine work. Was pressured, so he looked to his right and then blindly looked back left and threw the ball. The only player over there caught it. Alas, it was Landry.

WR Devin Thomas. Did a few decent things, but ran the wrong route in the red zone on one pass, leading to an incompletion. Also did a mini-touchdown dance after catching a pass in individual work. So, too, did Antwaan Randle El but there’s a difference.

QB Chase Daniel. Still too often inaccurate with his passes. Was way behind Malcolm Kelly on a slant pass. But did have one nice deep pass. He’s still learning, which is why he’s still not throwing in rhythm.

RT Stephon Heyer. Kept giving up pressure to Chris Wilson off the edge. Joe Bugel had to talk to him after one time when J.D. Skolnitsky got past him. Mostly, he kept allowing Wilson to turn the corner.

CB Justin Tryon. Here’s another caveat: this was for his work in the slot. Randle El beat him easily on one crossing route. I’d like to see Tryon more in this area, but this is also where he seems to have the most difficulty. He’s covered better on the outside.

WR Marques Hagans. Did not adjust to balls in the air well, turning the wrong way on two different passes — one in individual work and the other in the two-minute drill. Could be part of the learning process at receiver.

CB Michael Grant. Was easily beaten by Keith Eloi and then Trent Shelton on deep balls.

LB Rocky McIntosh. Not on the run; he was fine and he came through nicely on a blitz. But he struggled to cover the tight ends, especially on crossing routes.

WR Trent Shelton. Dropped a pass from Colt Brennan.

QB Colt Brennan. Had one pass knocked down at the line of scrimmage and the next pass was intercepted by Horton. Of course, Brennan made a couple good throws later.
