Seriously, who’s excited to see Curt Menefee talking soccer with Bruce Arena and Eric Wynalda on FOX – not Fox Soccer Channel, not that Plus network I can’t seem to get – before the UEFA Champions League final between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich gets beamed into every house in this country with an antenna? I can’t think of a better reason to be inside at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, in part because I can’t wait to see if it’s a train wreck or just really awkward and uncomfortable. Maybe it’ll be awesome, right?
Meanwhile, D.C. United will be in Houston, where they’ve never won – although they did make last year’s visit interesting, coming back from 3-0 down to lose, 4-3.
Women’s Pro Soccer is also off this weekend while the U.S. national team (with Freedom players Cat Whitehill and Abby Wambach – and former Freedom players Ali Krieger (FFC Frankfurt) and Lori Lindsey (Philadelphia)) is in Cleveland to face Germany (Saturday, ESPN2, 6).
But the Freedom – who have gone unbeaten in their last three matches to surge into third place in WPS – are keeping busy, hosting the Canadian national team at George Mason on Sunday at 5, creating a dilemma for Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod. Who will she play for? It’ll be announced at the Canadian embassy at 2, where a host of players and the head coaches from the Freedom and the Canadian national team will appear along with Capitals defenseman Shaone Morrisonn.
At the lower men’s level, Real Maryland (2-3-2) will host Charlotte (3-2-0) on Saturday at 6:30 at Richard Montgomery High.
