Coach disagrees with Al’s choice

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan knows why Albert Haynesworth isn’t training in Washington this offseason. He just doesn’t like it.

“I totally disagree with [Haynesworth’s] decision to not be there,” Shanahan said at the NFL’s annual meetings in Orlando. “But I respect him being there the first day and sitting down and talking to me man to man. Any time a person’s willing to do that, you feel good about the communication.”

As for what position Haynesworth will play in the 3-4 — the big fella is not a fan of nose tackle — Shanahan said, “Obviously he’s a dominating player. When the time comes we’ll evaluate where he should play and what gives us the best chance to win … Hopefully Albert will come in in great shape and do the things we need him to get done.”

Shanahan also said that running back Clinton Portis must report in better shape — to which teammates would say, “Amen.” Shanahan wants him to come in around 210 pounds, down 11 from last training camp. One knock that teammates had of Portis is that he did not train hard enough in the offseason, which has contributed to him losing much of his explosiveness.

The only offseason in which he’s fully participated in Washington also happened to be the one time he had financial incentives to do so.
