Merchants unfazed by Hillary event

Minding the store

The shopkeeps at Union Station have nary a bad word for Hillary Clinton, even when they heard she was taking over the Main Hall and the East Hall Dec. 6 for a fundraiser. After all, considering that Union Station hosts more than 50 early station-closing events a year — including the Georgetown University commencement — what does one more early closing matter?

Some were even looking forward to Hillary’s impending money-merrymaking bash. “It certainly will be a big uptick in business for us,” gushed “Ross,” the happy bartender at the Thunder Grill. All those worried about Amtrak trains being delayed needn’t be, as the West Hall, the main Amtrak gate, never closes except on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

When asked if the Thursday evening fundraiser would cause any problems for The Great Zimbabwe antiques shop, owner Harold Breedlove could only reply with a wry smile. “No problem!” he said. “Early closings are part of our lease contract.”
