Trading Bonds

Night people, morning people

White House Press Secretary Tony Snow had a simple answer when asked Wednesday why President Bush hadn’t spoken to Barry Bonds after his record-breaking home run on Tuesday night: sleep.

“The president was asleep when Barry Bonds hit his home run, and Barry Bonds was asleep when the president came to work today,” Snow said. “I mean, it’s one of those things where baseball players, especially after setting records, tend to stay up late — and especially when you’re three time zones away.”

When pressed, Snow said steroids never factored into the equation.

He said the president has made clear that “steroids are inappropriate; it’s a lousy example to kids,” but as far as Bonds in particular, “Major League Baseball is taking its look, [and] we’re certainly not going to try to be the fact witness on that.”
