Mets? collapse kept Jets off back pages

Welcome to another edition of “Good Line, Bad Line,” a weekly critique of which football analysts enlightened the masses with insightful commentary, and which ones would have kept their mouths shut.

» GOOD LINE: “If I were Jerry Jones, I get two things done. First, get Tony Romo signed as soon as possible because he?s not getting any worse. Second, make offensive coordinator Jason Garrett happy. I?m sure he?s happy now, but I?d make him really happy because with the influx of young coaches in the NFL, owners are opting for younger guys. Jason Garrett?s name is going to be on a lot of team?s list.”

? Howie Long on FOX NFL Sunday

» BAD LINE: “I think Rex Grossman is the guy and the Bears should have stayed with. What better team for him to get right against than the Lions, his best game last year with four touchdown passes? He throws the ball deep as good as anybody which is perfect against this Lions? defense. He?s a young kid and I think there?s too much panicking going on with the Bears. Too many people in that organization are listening to the media. Rex Grossman should not have lost his job, period. 1-2? No big deal. They started in ?05 1-2 and still went on and made the playoffs.”

? Terry Bradshaw on FOX NFL Sunday

» GOOD LINE: “The Cubs and the Red Sox each win a division within 10 minutes of each other. Well, then Brett Favre and the Packers being Super Bowl contenders is certainly not as far-fetched as that.”

? Chris Berman on ESPN?s Sunday Countdown

» BAD LINE: “The only fortunate thing is that the Mets? monumental collapse will keep the Jets off the back pages tomorrow.”

?Tiki Barber on NBC?s Football Night in America

» GOOD LINE: “Forget about Matt Leinart, he?s having problems in the desert. It has to be between Cutler and Young. I saw Young on Monday night against the New Orleans Saints, and I came away unbelievably impressed with his arm strength, his ability to read defenses and to run the football. He?s the ultimate weapon. Remember when Sports Illustrated put Randall Cunningham on the cover and called him “the ultimate weapon”? That?s exactly what this kid is. He?s only going to get better and he?s a winner when the game is on the line.”

?Boomer Esiason on CBS? NFL TODAY, referring to the league?s top young quarterbacks

» BEST LINE OF THE WEEK: “It?s like they?re in Dubai. They?re creating artificial islands.”

? Keith Olbermann on NBC?s Football Night in America describing the Miami grounds crew piling dirt on the soggy infield after the Dolphins-Raiders game was delayed because of a rain storm
