In five of American’s last six games, senior guard Garrison Carr (team-high 17.4 points per game) hasn’t led the Eagles (15-7, 7-1 Patriot League) in scoring — and that’s a good thing.
“That’s been an emphasis from the players, from the coaches, from everybody,” said Eagles head coach Jeff Jones. “Garrison’s a great shooter, and there’s no question he’s our go-to guy. But so much attention is dedicated to him by the opposition that we can hopefully get some open shots and easy opportunities, force people to guard other things or else give up.”
Senior guard Derrick Mercer (10.8 ppg) has helped spread the wealth, extending his streak of games in double figures to six with a team-high 15 points last weekend at Lehigh.
Senior forward Brian Gilmore (12.8 ppg) also looks like the starting five was meant for him after spending all of his junior season as the sixth man.
“I’ve definitely been trying to be more assertive as of late,” said Gilmore. “Guys are really going to gang up on Garrison, they’re going to foul him, be physical, they’re going to have people showing on him on screens. It’s up to us to make those guys pay when they’re helping out.”

After ending an 11-game skid last weekend against Fordham — in which freshman Aaron Ware and senior Noel Wilmore made their first starts of the year — the Colonials (7-13, 1-7 Atlantic 10) will look to make it two in a row against the Explorers (12-10, 3-5), who have lost three straight. Wilmore had a team-high 16 points in a loss at La Salle two weeks ago.
