Mourning Moreno’s miss
» D.C. United forward Jaime Moreno missed his second penalty kick of the summer Saturday, pulling an attempt from the spot wide in the 81st minute of a 0-0 tie with New York. The 34-year-old, who has played in 26 of 28 matches since April, said afterward fatigue wasn’t to blame. Right. The cost to D.C.’s season could be even greater if the talismanic Bolivian blows a chance in Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup final.
Spared judgment for CC
» It’s admirable to award Milwaukee Brewers ace CC Sabathia with a no-hitter after an obvious missed call when Sabathia misplayed Andy LaRoche’s fifth-inning squibber Sunday. But had it been correctly deemed an error instead of a hit right away, would Sabathia have held up to the pressure for another four innings? It had to be easier with the no-hitter already off the table.
Look before you leap
» An hour before kickoff against James Madison on Saturday, two parachutists landed at the 35-yard line of Duke’s Wallace Wade Stadium with a game ball. The problem was, they were supposed to be at North Carolina’s Kenan Stadium eight miles away. The original jump was canceled by bad weather. A break in the clouds, however, revealed a stadium and the jumpers made their leap after all. They didn’t realize that they were over the wrong stadium until it was too late.
