AU’s Comstock opts for Brand logic

American University director of athletics Joni Comstock resigned Thursday to become a senior vice president for the NCAA and report directly to president Myles Brand.

“She informed us a day or two ago that things were moving in this direction,” said AU spokesman David Taylor. “We will be working both the oversight of the department during the transition while she’s here – she’ll be here until at least through September – and we’ll also look at a search process.”

Comstock has experience at the national level — this past season she chaired the NCAA women’s basketball committee, responsible for running the 64-team NCAA Division I women’s basketball tournament.

AU sports teams captured 13 Patriot League titles during Comstock’s three-year tenure. The university also discontinued its men’s and women’s tennis teams and men’s golf team this past spring.
