Skins give quarterback green light to seek trade
The Redskins made their thoughts clear on Jason Campbell as a starter, opting for Donovan McNabb instead. Now they’ll wait to see if other teams agree with them.
The Redskins can trade or release Campbell. He could return as a backup, but that’s an unlikely scenario. The question is how many teams are in the market for a quarterback? Carolina, Oakland and Buffalo are among the possibilities; other teams view him as a backup. The fact that he would be on a one-year deal would decrease his value. One NFL source said the Redskins would do well to receive a fifth-round pick in return.
“When they tried to trade him before, they couldn’t get any interest,” the source said.
But he still has fans out there.
“He’s a fighter, so I’m not worried about Jason,” Redskins end/linebacker Andre Carter said.
One NFC executive said: “The kid can still play.”
Meanwhile, the Redskins also reportedly offered defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth in the Eagles trade. His agent had no comment, but it’s clear that there’s concern about how Haynesworth will handle playing in a 3-4 defense. Linemen in this front need to play unselfish and fill roles, setting up linebackers. In an uncapped year, maybe someone takes on his hefty contract.
“If you’re playing a 3-4, you have to get people who want to play it,” the executive said. “As good as Albert is, just to have him is one thing, but if you don’t play him a certain way then it’s a waste.”
