Virginia duo collect ACC honors

The first two starting assignments of the career of Virginia cornerback Maurice Canady have produced two awards from the ACC. On Monday, Canady was named co-defensive back of the week. The Richmond resident, a freshman, had nine tackles and forced a fumble which he recovered at the Cavaliers’ 2-yard-line in Virginia’s 41-40 victory over Miami.

Junior quarterback Rocco was named offensive back of the week, completing 29 of 37 passes for 300 yards and four touchdowns, including the game winner with 6 seconds left, a 10-yarder to tight end Jake McGee. During the drive, Rocco accounted for all 87 yards, and converted a pair of fourth downs. The Lynchburg resident also set a program record completing 18 straight passes.

After losing six straight games, Virginia (4-6, 2-4) has won two in a row and is thinking bowl eligibility. The Cavaliers would qualify for a bowl berth with wins over North Carolina (Thursday) and at Virginia Tech (Nov. 24).
