Grossman wants to start

Rex Grossman didn’t exactly issue a challenge to Jason Campbell — or any other quarterback on the roster. But he also wasn’t shy about his desire to serve as more than just a backup.

Grossman met with the local media for the first time since he was signed Wednesday. Nobody has said what Grossman’s role will be — challenging for the starting job or simply entering as a No. 2 guy. Coach Mike Shanahan would only say that he likes competition at every position. Grossman spent last season in Houston with new Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Grossman said he feels like he’s a good fit for the offense because it uses a lot of seven-step drops and play-action passes.

So when Grossman was asked if he felt he could still start, he said, “Yeah, that’s my goal. i want to start in this league at some point and get back there and play. Every quarterback who plays in the NFL wants to start so … that’s kind of an odd question…. But I definitely think I can. I have a lot of confidence in myself. Hopefully this is a steppingstone to the second half of my career.

“Nobody presented any scenario to me. They said they were glad to have me as part of hte team and that’s how I’m taking it. I’m here to help the Redskins win a Super Bowl, whatever way I can. I just want to be thrown into the mix.”
