Trembley: Baltimore Orioles’ Olson not attacking hitters; Walker throws on side, nears return

Garrett Olson sat at a table in the middle of the Orioles clubhouse Wednesday afternoon, ferociously gobbling a sandwich.

If only he attacked hitters in the same fashion.

Orioles manager Dave Trembley didn?t hold back Wednesday when discussing the left-hander?s approach. The 24-year-old is notbeing aggressive enough.

“It really doesn’t play in your favor when you’re 2-0 or 3-0 to those guys, especially the guys that are hitting seven, eight and nine [in the lineup],” Trembley said. “We’re just not attacking guys, just not being aggressive with our fastball so hopefully it gets better as we go along.”

Olson didn?t hide after the game, one in which he allowed nine hits and six runs over 4.2 innings. It was a learning experience for Olson.

“I learned you just have to be aggressive,” Olson said after the game. “When the team puts up runs behind you, you have to attack hitters right away. If you don?t do that, you start to mess around with them, things can start to happen bad really quick.”

The snowball started rolling on Olson in the fifth inning Tuesday, when he allowed a home run and five runs as the Blue Jays jumped ahead in an eventual 10-8 win.

In his last four outings, Olson is 0-2 with a 10.89 ERA (23 earned runs in 19.2 IP).

“Pitch selection is huge in this game,” Olson said. “The most important thing is being confident in what you throw, whether it?s a good pitch in that situation. If you have full conviction of it, great things can happen. For me, I felt like there were some times I felt behind hitters and didn?t establish my fastball command.”

INJURY UPDATES: Jamie Walker was scheduled to throw a side session Wednesday afternoon. The situational left-hander tossed 25 pitches to live hitters Tuesday afternoon, and felt good after the outing.

Wednesday, Trembley said Walker?s status likely would be determined by Thursday morning.

Infielder Alex Cintron practiced with the Orioles again Wednesday. He?s headed on a rehab assignment to Single-A Frederick and Double-A Bowie in the next week.
