United roster near completion

With five days remaining before their 2008 regular-season opener, D.C. United’s 28-man roster is almost complete.

United is on the verge of signing Brazilian forward Cezar Hermenegildo to a senior-roster spot, and the team also expects to complete a developmental deal with rookie Dane Murphy (Virginia). Second-year forward Guy-Roland Kpene, however, is in the process of being released.

United will take an 18-man squad to Kansas City for its season-opener Saturday night, and then will travel on Monday to Mexico, where it will face Pachuca CF in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup semifinals on April 1. The return leg is April 9 at RFK Stadium. Pachuca is the reigning title-holder for both the Champions’ Cup and SuperLiga.

Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber will speak at United’s season kickoff luncheon today at the Capital Hilton.
