UNC (27-7) had 18 turnovers and hit three of 17 shots from behind the arc but was comfortable with the run-and-gun style of No. 15 Long Island in a 102-87 win Friday. The Tar Heels get more of the same from Washington (24-10), the nation’s third-highest scoring team (83.5 ppg). The Huskies survived a late rush from No. 10 Georgia 68-65 as Isaiah Thomas (19 points) deflected a pass in the closing seconds as the Bulldogs tried to set up a 3-pointer. UNC seeks its sixth national title and third in seven years. Washington seeks its second straight trip to the Sweet 16.

When the teams met on Jan. ?29, Marquette (21-14) handed Syracuse (27-7) its fourth straight loss 76-70 even though the Orange shot 57 percent from the floor and 46 percent from the arc. On Friday, Marquette never trailed in a 66-55 victory over No.?6 Xavier, holding Musketeers’ top scorer Tu Holloway to five points, 15 below his average. The Golden Eagles will have to employ a different strategy Sunday against balanced Syracuse. The Orange advanced with a routine 77-60 win over No. 14 Indiana State.

SOUTHWEST REGION

No. 1 Kansas vs. No. 9 Illinois

When » Sunday, 8:40 p.m.

There are some bad omens for Kansas (33-2). Last year, playing in Oklahoma, the Jayhawks were seeded No. 1 and lost to No. 9 Northern Iowa. Can No. 9 Illinois (20-13) pull off the same feat against its former coach Bill Self? The Illini never trailed in a 73-62 win over UNLV behind T.C. Williams grad Mike Davis (22 points, nine rebounds, five assists).

No. 2 Notre Dame vs. No. 10 Florida St.

When » Sunday, 9:40 p.m.

Even though it was playing close to home, Notre Dame (27-6) struggled in a 69-56 victory over No. 15 Akron on Friday. Florida State (22-10), the nation’s top shooting defense, defeated No.?7 Texas A&M 57-50, holding the Aggies to 31 percent from the floor even though ACC defensive player of the year Chris Singleton (five points, four fouls) was unimpressive in his return from foot surgery.

No. 3 Purdue vs. No. 11 VCU

When » Sunday, 7:10 p.m.

Where » United Center, Chicago

TV » TBS

VCU (25-11) bore the brunt of outrage directed at the NCAA selection committee. Sure enough, the Rams have won two games decisively, toppling No. ?12 USC on Wednesday and No. 6 Georgetown on Friday as reserve Brandon Rozzell (26 points) hit half of VCU’s 12 3-pointers. Purdue (26-7) is playing 110 miles from home and cruised to a 65-43 win over No. 14 Saint Peter’s.

WEST REGION

No. 4 Texas vs. No. 5 Arizona

Where » BOK Center, Tulsa, Okla.

TV » TNT

Arizona (28-7) survived Friday as Derrick Williams (22 points) blocked a shot at the buzzer in a 77-75 victory over No. 12 Memphis. Blocked shots by another 6-foot-8 future NBA lottery pick figured prominently in Texas’ 85-81 victory over No. 13 Oakland as Tristan Thompson (17 points, 10 rebounds, seven blocks) starred. This is the first time these bluebloods will meet in the tournament.

No. 1 Duke vs. No. 8 Michigan

When » Sunday, 2:45 p.m.

Where » Time Warner Cable Arena, Charlotte, N.C.

TV » CBS

Has Jalen Rose doomed his former team? After he caused a stir in a TV documentary, calling black players at Duke “Uncle Toms,” Michigan (21-13) faces the Blue Devils (31-4). Duke will be fired up, not only for the chance to play the Wolverines in North Carolina but also by the return of Kyrie Irving, who scored 14 points in 20 minutes in Friday’s 87-45 rout of No. 16 Hampton. Michigan dismantled No. 9 Tennessee 75-45 as seven players scored at least eight points, including five who hit 3-pointers in coach John Beilein’s perimeter offense. Duke defeated Rose’s “Fab Five” Michigan team in the 1992 NCAA final 71-51.
