‘Giant fake-out’? News chopper may have spoiled new name announcement for Washington Football Team

A chopper for a local news station may have spoiled the new name for the Washington Football Team hours before the big reveal.

Footage obtained by NBC Washington on Tuesday evening appears to show through the windows at FedEx Field a sign or banner that has the name “Commanders” written on it.

“Footage from our @nbcwashington Chopper4 and it sure looks like ‘Commanders’ is the new #WashingtonFootball team name! (Unless this is all a giant fake-out…),” said a tweet from NBC Washington’s sports Twitter account that includes the video.

“Official announcement comes tomorrow on The Today Show,” the tweet added. Today also airs on NBC.

The Washington Examiner emailed a Washington Football Team representative for comment.

The franchise has been without a team name since July 2020, when it dropped its Redskins branding amid growing pressure from critics who argued it was racist and insensitive to Native Americans. Commanders was one of the names considered to be a finalist.
