Marines: When in combat uniform, stay in your car
Gen. James Conway isn’t only a Marine Corps commandant, he’s also the service’s top fashion cop. Conway issued a memo this week cracking down on Marines wearing their combat utility uniforms (MCCUUs) — the service’s camouflage fatigues — out and about among civilians.
“The MCCUU is a field uniform and is not appropriate for wear in a civilian environment,” Conway wrote. It is inappropriate on any public transportation and at any “DOD-leased, civilian facilities, such as those in Crystal City.” The uniform is only authorized when commuting to and from work, “at off-base establishments when using drive-thru services such as ATMs, fast-food restaurants or dry cleaners” and “bona fide emergencies.”
Conway goes on to note that, while on base, the desert combat uniform with sleeves rolled up is the “uniform of the day” in the summer, while the woodland uniform with sleeves rolled down gets the nod in winter.
