A rare bottle of run fetched $20,000 at auction Wednesday night, as the Distilled Spirits Council held its annual heritage dinner on the lawn at Mount Vernon. The 750 ml bottle of Martha Washington Colonial Rum, number one of a limited edition of 12, was distilled in 2005 at the George Washington Distillery. The winning bidder was the Diageo spirits company.
DISCUS also inducted five new members into the George Washington Spirits Society — Sen. Tom Harkin, former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating, Pernod Ricard CEO Patrick Ricard, Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Board Commissioner Esther Vassar and Bennett Glazer, CEO of Glazer’s Family of Companies.
