McDaniel men’s basketball coach Kevin Curley acknowledges the Provident Pride of Maryland Tournament is one his team’s most competitive events of the season.
“It definitely provides a good challenge for us early,” he said. “Starting with the tournament right through conference play, we have a difficult schedule but, as we proved last year, I think we can compete with anyone on our schedule.”
The Green Terror (1-0) begins its to be the “best Division III team in Maryland” for the second straight year when it travels to southern Maryland to face St. Mary’s (3-0) tonight at 7. Other first-round games in the event that features eight of the state’s nine Division III teams are: Johns Hopkins (1-1) at Frostburg State (1-0) at 7; Salisbury (0-3) at Goucher (0-1) at 7:30; and Stevenson (0-3) at Washington (0-1) at 7:30.
Hood (3-1), which lost in last year’s final, will not compete in this year’s event, which moves to Stevenson College for second-round and consolation rounds on Saturday and championship rounds on Sunday. – Dave Carey
Loyola men
The Greyhounds (1-3) played James Madison (2-1) in the third round of the preseason National Invitation Tournament last night at Belk Arena in Davidson, N.C. Loyola concludes the tournament tonight at 8 against host and 25th-ranked Davidson (3-1). The Greyhounds conclude a five-game road trip on Saturday afternoon at 1 against Vermont (3-2), which lost, 89-74, to Maryland in overtime in College Park last week. Loyola returns home to host Siena (Dec. 3), Niagara (Dec. 7) and Coppin State (Dec. 10) at Reitz Arena. – Dave Carey
Morgan State men
The Bears’ trip to Florida produced a pair of losses after an opening-round victory in the Glenn Wilkes Classic in Daytona Beach. The Bears (2-4) followed a 72-67 victory over Marshall with a 66-37 loss to Utah and a 71-54 setback to Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Bears visit Mississippi on Saturday before returning to Hill Field House for games with St. Francis (Dec. 1) and Coppin State (Dec. 6). – Sean Welsh
