JMU grad comes close in U.S. Mid-Am

Less than a month after regaining her amateur status, former James Madison standout and Futures Tour player Carol Robertson, made it to the final of the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, where she lost to Meghan Stassi of Oakland Park, Fla., 2 up, Thursday at Wichita Country Club (Kan.).

Stassi, the former coach at Mississippi, took a 4 up lead in the championship match, playing 6-under (with concessions) in an eight-hole span from Nos. 4 through 11.

Robertson, a 27-year-old who is an assistant coach at Old Dominion, rebounded by winning the next three holes with par-par-birdie. But she couldn’t get the match back to even and conceded a par putt to Stassi on the 18th hole after failing to recover from a greenside bunker.

It was the third title for Stassi, 32, who also captured the Women’s Mid-Am in 2006 and 2007.

Robertson’s consolation is an exemption into next year’s Mid-Amateur in her hometown, Virginia Beach. The tournament will be held at Bayville Golf Club, Sept. 17-22. Her husband, Jason Robertson, played in the U.S. Men’s Mid-Amateur earlier this week, failing to make it past stroke-play in Southampton, N.Y.
