Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama favors requiring young women to register for the draft just as young men must do. And he favors abolishing the ban on women serving in combat. I offer two predictions on this. First, before the week is out, John McCain will be criticized as a racist if he affirms his own long-standing position of opposition to women in the draft. By affirming such opposition, the liberal critique will contend, McCain will be speaking in racist code language about black men and white women.
Second, if he is elected, sometime during his White House tenure Obama will ask Congress to significantly expand federal regulatory support for bans on speech concerning a variety of topics, including race, religion, sexual orientation, gender and “hatred” in general. The Democratic majority in Congress will then effectively repeal the First Amendment by passing the legislation and American economic, corporate and community life will be subjected to the same speech code facism that has turned our campuses into the least free areas of our nation.
