Their NFL careers won’t go to pot

We’ll resist the jokes about careers going up in smoke and ignore the temptation to be blunt about the subject. When it comes to prospective NFL draftees, smoking marijuana is not a death sentence. Nor does it have to impact their draft standing. “I don’t think marijuana usage is as big a deal as it was 10 years ago in the eyes of most teams,” NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said.

But there is a catch: Teams don’t want players who are habitual users. Why? Because as the Redskins have found with tight end Fred Davis and tackle Trent Williams, they could miss games — and in some cases a season.

“The habitual usage of any narcotic, including alcohol, is a concern,” Mayock said. “If it’s habitual and the guy gets suspended, it will impact your evaluation of him. If it’s a one-time thing — and it’s not like you’re beating women or a convicted felon … it’s not an issue.”
