Seeking Congressional approval

Tiger Woods wants the AT&T National to return to Congressional Country Club in 2012. Now it is up to the members to agree, said Congressional President Bret HartMonday.

According to Hart, the Tiger Woods Foundation has proposed a long-term agreement that would keep the tournament at Congressional through 2017. The proposal has been well received by the club’s board of directors, who have recommended that members accept. The members will hold a town hall meeting on July 29 to discuss the proposal, then have three weeks to vote.

“There’s no doubt about it,” said Hart. “Tiger wants to be here after 2011. We’re delighted with that. Now it will be up the membership.”

If the members approve, the tournament will be held at Congressional for three years and likely for six. Either side can opt out of the agreement after 2014. In two separate votes, members overwhelmingly approved hosting the tournament in 2007-2009.

“I’m very excited about the board approving that,” said Woods. “As I said, I want our golf tournament to be there in perpetuity. It is an unbelievable golf course, and in the nation’s capital, and on our nation’s birthday. The stars couldn’t get aligned even more than what it is.”

Congressional will host the tournament next year, but will undergo renovation in 2010 in preparation for the 2011 U.S. Open. The Tiger Woods Foundation is searching for a facility to host the event those two years.
