Over the weekend, Rajon Rondo had a historic triple-double (18 points, 17 rebounds and 20 assists), and Deron Williams set a Nets franchise record with 57 points. The point guard position is as deep as ever, so who is the best right now?
5. Russell Westbrook, Thunder ?» The 23-year-old leads all point guards in scoring (23.7 points a game). But Westbrook averages just 5.5 assists and has the worst assist/turnover ratio (1.35) among 46 qualifying point guards.
4. Tony Parker, Spurs » San Antonio has the second-best record in the Western Conference with Parker averaging a team-high 19.2 points and 7.9 assists a game. With Tim Duncan having a more reduced role, the Spurs have leaned heavily on the former NBA Finals MVP.
3. Deron Williams, Nets » With Brooks Lopez playing in just five games this season, Williams hasn’t had much help. In his first full season with the Nets, Williams has averaged a team-high 22.6 points and 8.2 assists a game. But he is also shooting a career-worst 41.4 percent from the field.
2. Chris Paul, Clippers » Paul is the only player to rank among the top five point guards in scoring (19.7) and assists (8.3). He’s also extremely efficient. Paul has the second-best assist/turnover ratio (3.79) among point guards and is fourth in shooting percentage (.487). He’s also third in the league in steals per game (2.16).
1. Derrick Rose, Bulls » If Paul is the prototypical point guard, Rose is a glimpse into the future of the position. The reigning MVP has shown that a point guard can also be a physically imposing figure. Rose has missed some time with injury but has averaged 22.4 points and 7.7 assists for the Bulls, who own the best record in the NBA.
