Fresh off the news that their film had been nominated for a Golden Globe Best Picture, three of the young stars of “The Great Debaters” were in D.C. Sunday night for a special screening at the Lincoln Theatre. Nate Parker, who plays the role of Henry Lowe in the film, sang the praises of dynamo film star Denzel Washington, who directed and acts in the emotional picture about champion debaters at an all-black Texas college.

“He never came in with his accolades on his shoulder,” said Parker, “which made it easier to think that I brought something to the table.”

Denzel Whitaker (whose name coincidentally marries “Debaters” co-stars Denzel and Forest Whitaker) plays James Farmer Jr. in the film and told the packed audience he’s most often asked what he’d debate in real life. “The SATs,” he replied easily. It’s probably because the 17-year-old is currently applying to film school and “could use any connections,” he said, jokingly.
