Lanier’s changing tune on e-mail-reading aide

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier changed her tune after being told a top aide was under oath when he testified that his primary job was the check the chief’s e-mail.

When The Washington Examiner asked Lanier on Tuesday about Inspector Ralph Ennis, who earns $110,000 a year to primarily read her e-mails, she initially sent the following statement:

That’s pretty funny! I wish I had someone, ANYONE that could assist me with the volume of email that I get daily. Unfortunately that is not the case. The best I can ask for is to have someone hold my Blackberry while I am actively speaking at press conferences or public speaking engagements and alert me if a situation arises. Inspector Ennis is the Chief of Staff here and puts in almost as many hours as I do. Under Chief Ramsey this position was held by a Commander.
I do expect Inspector Ennis to remain informed on ANY major issue I am dealing with. His coordination of significant matters that come before me, the work he does and the amount of work require a considerable level of comprehension. However, I personally answer my emails almost 24 hours a day. Anyone in the community will tell you that.

But when The Examiner pointed out that Ennis has made his comments regarding his job while under oath, the chief sent the following statement:

“Inspector Ennis is one of four people that may monitor Chief Lanier’s e-mail.”
