Vasquez: ‘That’s my house’

Maryland guard looking forward to Cameron trip

Greivis Vasquez has a name for Duke’s fabled Cameron Indoor Stadium — one that will likely to draw him plenty of taunting from the Blue Devils’ raucous student body, known as the Cameron Crazies.

“That’s my house,” the junior guard said. “I love going in there. It’s going to be fun.”

How enjoyable Vasquez and the Terrapins’ trip to one of college basketball’s most illustrious venues remains to be seen. Maryland (13-5, 2-2 ACC) is a decided underdog Saturday at noon against the second-ranked Blue Devils (17-1, 4-0) — who are a 11-0 in Durham, N.C., while Maryland is winless in two ACC road games this season.

“We just have to keep up our toughness and keep getting better,” Terps coach Gary Williams said. “I like these guys, I like coaching them.”

Vasquez’s love affair with the venue was formed two years ago when, as a freshman, he had 13 points and 12 assists as he was being taunted in Spanish by Duke fans to lead his team to a 85-77 victory.

“They’re very smart down smart down there,” Williams quipped. “They figure Greivis is from Venezuela, so that means he knows Spanish. It’s amazing.”

The Terrapins, who are led by Vasquez (17 ppg), forward Landon Milbourne (12.6 ppg) and guard Adrian Bowie (11.0 ppg), are coming off a much-needed, 84-78 victory over Virginia to end a two-game losing streak.

Duke counters with one of the most prolific offenses the Terrapins will face this season, as it features four players who average at least 10 points per game — forward Kyle Singler (16.8), forward Gerald Henderson (14.4), guard Jon Scheyer (13.2) and guard Nolan Smith (10.3).
