There’s little to be learned from the past

In a tumultuous decade for the Redskins, some of their coaches had debuts that foreshadowed their tenures. Others were misleading.

5. Terry Robiskie (2000) » With the Skins struggling at 7-6, Dan Snyder fired Norv Turner and promoted Robiskie. Bad idea. The Redskins were disorganized in a 32-13 loss at the struggling Cowboys, committing 121 yards of penalties.

4. Marty Schottenheimer (2001) » Jeff George and Tony Banks were a combined 15-for-32 for 119 yards in a pitiful 30-3 loss at the Chargers. Schottenheimer started 0-5 before finishing 8-8.

3. Jim Zorn (2008) »  On a Thursday night national TV game, a lackluster 16-7 loss at the Giants — in which the Redskins’ offense managed just 209 yards — was all the evidence needed to realize that Zorn (12-20) was in over his head.

2. Joe Gibbs (2004) » Clinton Portis sprinted 64 yards for a TD on the first play, and the Redskins went on to beat the Bucs 16-10 at home. A nice start but also a portent of a punchless offense under QB Mark Brunell and Gibbs (31-36).

1. Steve Spurrier (2002) » In a 31-23 win over the Cardinals, QB Shane Matthews (28-for-40, 327 yards) lit up FedEx. But Washington would score more than 31 points only one other time in two unsuccessful but entertaining years under Spurrier (12-20).
