Bipartisanship
Proving that the key to bipartisanship is to avoid controversy altogether, the House on Tuesday passed a resolution honoring the “life and accomplishments” of opera singer Luciano Pavarotti, who died earlier this year.
It was also expected to pass Tuesday night a similar resolution regarding … Christmas.
The Pavarotti resolution, introduced by opera fan Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Calif., with 31 co-sponsors, passed on voice vote early in the day.
Rep. Steve King’s, R-Iowa, Christmas resolution — “recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith” — boasted 58 co-sponsors, and was set for a voice vote shortly afterward. But a roll callvote was demanded, which postponed the vote until the evening.
One Republican source said some Democrats might vote “present” in retaliation for some Republicans doing likewise on a previous measure recognizing the Muslim holiday of Ramadan.
