‘Carpetbagger Curse’ alive and well

Bronx Cheer

With their next loss (or the next Red Sox win), the New York Yankees will be eliminated from postseason contention.

Which means that the “Carpetbagger Curse,” which we’ve detailed here before, lives on. To recap: The Yankees, after winning championships in four out of five years prior to Sen. Hillary Clinton’s election, have failed to win even one since she became senator (their last, in fact, came only days before her first win, in 2000).

It’s not the first time we’ve seen this phenomenon, either: After Robert F. Kennedy moved to New York to run for Senate in 1964, the team went from being a perennial contender to missing the playoffs for more than a decade.

Then again, this could be the Cubs’ year.
