The current players on the Maryland women’s basketball team already established their legacy when they defeated Duke and won the school’s first national championship last spring.
But, while their place in history is already secured, a number of players, along with coach Brenda Frese are still developing their individual legacies. Frese won her 100th and 101st games at Maryland last week following wins over N.C. State Wednesday and Michigan State on Saturday.
“It’s special because what it means behind it in terms of the players in our program that believed and took a chance to come here and be a part of this as well as all the hard work of our coaching staff and our support staff,” said Frese on her 100th win. “When you hit milestones like that, what it symbolizes is what’s most special.”
Senior guard Shay Doron is now second on the school’s all-time scoring list as she scored 10 points Wednesday to pass Christy Winters, who had 1,681 points from 1985-90. Doron now has 1,692 career points after finishing with 11 points Saturday andnow only trails Vicky Bullett (1,928 points from 1986-89) on the all-time list.
Should Doron break Bullett’s scoring record, it may be short-lived as junior forward Crystal Langhorne is quickly moving up the points list herself. Following her 28-point performance against Michigan State, Langhorne now has 1,465 career points, which put her eighth on the all-time list. She also has 790 career rebounds, which put her third in school history.
“Obviously we’ve had some great players here so that record is not going to stay long,” said Doron of her scoring milestone. “I’m not worried about that. I’m worried about winning two straight national titles. That’s much more important to me than a scoring record. I don’t really care about it.”
Frese said all of these potential individual milestones means a lot to her as they symbolize all of the hard work her players have put in since arriving in College Park.
