GW is looking to snap a seven-game losing streak
George Washington director of athletics Jack Kvancz used one word Wednesday to describe his feelings about the Colonials men’s basketball season thus far.
“Frustrating,” said Kvancz, declining any further evaluation of the program or head coach Karl Hobbs, for now. “I feel what I feel, but I’m not going to say anything until the end of the season.”
The Colonials (6-9, 0-3 Atlantic 10) have lost seven straight games for the second time in consecutive seasons. They also recently announced the departure of Xavier Alexander, who left George Washington for personal reasons after starting 12 of the season’s first 13 games. He’s the fourth player to leave the program in less than 12 months.
Things don’t get any easier with tonight’s visit by the Flyers (16-2, 2-1), who have won eight of nine and are receiving votes in the latest Associated Press poll.
George Washington has shown signs of turning things around, playing well for long stretches and leading in each of its last two games, both four-point losses. Wynton Witherspoon, who was bench in four games during the holidays, is averaging 14.3 points in his last three contests.
The latest setback is the health of junior swingman Damian Hollis, who suffered a mild concussion in last week’s game at Duquesne. He was kept out of last weekend’s contest at St. Louis as a precaution, and his status is day-to-day for tonight’s game.
