Third quarter review

Talked to one NFL evaluator at halftime; thought the Skins need to do a better job of giving Campbell some easy pases to compete. Said he’s not the sort to go long then work his way back down; needs to start short and then go long. Sort of like what the Pats did with Tom Brady. But Brady has receivers who are excellent underneath and long; so it opens up a lot of possibilities underneath.

…Nine penalties by early in the third? Not good. Great insight on that comment, huh?

…Fred Smoot is better when he plays press coverage. The plays he’s made tonight have come out of this coverage. Otherwise, the DBs have given too much cushion at times.

…OK, what did we say about Landry earlier in the night? Good job of being where he should be and doing what he’s supposed to: intercepting a tipped pass. Perfect. Rocky McIntosh tipped the pass and had good coverage on the play.

…Is the Colt Brennan era over? He looked terrible on most of his throws and did not throw with a lot of zip or in rhythm. That’s what results in a 99-yard interception return by the other team. Brennan was way off on two of his other passes, not even giving his guy a chance. Chase Daniel has a good shot to beat him out. He does not project to anything more than a No. 3, but he does what the coaches ask and he does it the way they want it done. We’ll see what he does when he gets a chance.

…One thing I like about Marcus Mason: he runs with good depth and patience. I like his positioning on runs around the end, how he stays the right distance behind the lead blocker. His patience resulted in a nine-yard run earlier in the quarter.

…Brennan looks shot. The Redskins tried to get him back with the screen pass on his first pass after the pick, but the lack of protection hurt him.

…Kevin Barnes had excellent position on his interception. But why the heck did Kevin O’Connell make that throw. Still, good job by Barnes.

…On the play before his pick, Chris Wilson did a nice job getting off the block of the tight end and getting in on a 2-yard stop. Wilson had an excellent base on the play.

…Devin Clark had one series at left tackle. Apparently that was enough; he was out on the next series.

…Marko Mitchell ran what he runs best: a vertical route. Just a little stutter step and Brennan made a perfect pass. He was under some pressure, too. Man, did Brennan need that one. That’s what a short field can do for a guy.

…Don’t see there’s any way you can cut Mitchell now. Why expose him? He’s a 6-foot-4 guy who can run; he may be inactive every game but so what. Surely another team would take a flyer on him if he’s left exposed.
