Chris Wilson didn’t want to leave in the first place, but the Redskins didn’t have a spot for him. They have one now. Or, at least, they want Wilson to challenge for one.
Wilson signed with Washington Tuesday, returning to the team with whom he spent four seasons. Wilson signed with Philadelphia last summer, but was released after the preseason and did not play during the 2011 regular season.
“It feels awesome,” he said by phone. “I’m just excited man. I feel like I’m coming back home.”
Wilson still faces a difficult task. The Redskins are set at outside linebacker with Ryan Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo. And they have two young backups in Markus White and Rob Jackson. Also, Lorenzo Alexander can play both inside and outside.
“Any idiot would recognize the talent at that position,” Wilson said. “I think I fit right in. I can be used. At the end of the day I’m not worried where I fit in, I’m all about wins and losses.”
Wilson also can help on special teams. He’s also one of the more engaging — and humorous — players in the locker room. Wilson is just happy to have a job again.
“One of the hardest things I’ve ever done is to sit out a year,” he said. “I was perfectly healthy and perfectly capable. It was very hard and frustrating at times. But that’s what makes today so special.”
Wilson is the second inside linebacker signed by Washington this week. Bryan Kehl, who has played with the Giants and Rams, signed Monday. He’ll battle for a backup inside linebacker position and would help on special teams.
