“I’ve always shied from speaking engagements in season, especially in a pennant race in September,” said Minaya, the first Hispanic general manager in baseball history. “And boy, I hope we win today!”
He knows he has a good adversary. “For those of you who are Nationals fans, you’ve got yourself a good manager,” he said, referring to Manny Acta, who worked under Minaya with both the Montreal Expos and Mets as third base coach.
Speaking of his own upbringing in Queens, Minaya said, “Remember the 7 Train? Remember John Rocker? Well, I am a product of the 7 Train.”
Now, he says, thanks to his days with the Texas Rangers organization, he’s not afraid to call President Bush and “ask him a question.”/>
