Washington to hang with Farrell

Might some prominent Washingtonians get in trouble in Utah this weekend? It’s not out of the realm of possibility, being that they’ll be hanging with Hollywood bad boy Colin Farrell.

A sizable contingent of local folks is flying to Utah to attend the world premiere of “Kicking It,” a new film directed by longtime Washingtonian filmmaker Susan Koch and produced by Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis that takes a look at homeless soccer players and their journey to the Cape Town 2006 Homeless World Cup.

Notables making the trek include local executive producers Mark Ein, Raul Fernandez, Sheila Johnson, Soroush Shebabi and Jack Davies, as well as former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner and Mayor Adrian Fenty and his wife, Michelle. (It’s rumored that the Fentys are traveling to Utah in high style aboard someone’s private jet. … Fenty’s office was mum on the subject.)

The biggest head turner at Saturday’s premiere will be none other than Farrell, who narrates the film. There’s an after-party, too, and some are hoping that another Irishman — Bono — will drop by. (U2 is also attending the festival to premiere its first digital 3D film — “U2 3D.”)

“Kicking It” is similar to Leonsis’ last film outing, “Nanking” (which is short-listed for an Academy Award nomination), in that it follows his penchant for “filmanthrophy”: movies designed to raise awareness of a cause and to spur action. “Nanking” detailed the Japanese atrocities against Chinese civilians in the lead-up to World War II.

On Sunday, Washington Life magazine and The Paley Center for Media will host a “Salute to Washington Filmmaking,” honoring Leonsis. Rep. John Conyers, Farrell, and actresses AmyBrenneman and Glenn Close (and the aforementioned executive producers, of course) are all slated to attend.
